What is a transfer case? A transfer case transfers the power of the transmission to the drive shafts of the vehicle. Transfer cases are used in four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles.

Transfer cases can be broken down into different types depending on the specific descriptors. First, a transfer case is classified according to drive type. It can be either Gear Driven or Chain Driven. As the name states, the drive type is determined by the type of mechanism used. Second, transfer cases are classified by their housing type: married or divorced. Married types are bolted directly to the transmission and housed together. Divorced types are housed separately from the transmission, which are common on long wheel based vehicles. Finally, transfer cases are classified by the transfer shift type: manual shift on the fly (M.S.O.F) or electronic shift on the fly (E.S.O.F). M.S.O.F transfer cases have a selector lever on the driver’s side floor transmission hump and may also have either two sealed automatic front axle locking hubs or two manual front axle hub selectors of “LOCK” and “UNLOCK” or “FREE”.E.S.O.F. transfer cases have a dash-mounted selector switch or buttons with front sealed automatic locking axle hubs or drive flanges. Some models also have what is called selectrac, which has a slider switch on the center console.
